Avinguda del Paral-lel

General Information

Avinguda del Paral-lel is one of the most central and most important streets in Barcelona. It is 2.5 km long, it begins from Plaça d’Espanya and ends in Port Vell, passing through well-known areas such as Eixample and Montjuic. Its name means “Parallel Avenue“ because this is the only street in Barcelona that is parallel to the Equator.

The boulevard was inaugurated in the autumn of 1894 and since then it has received many names but most of the people usually called it “Avinguda del Paral-lel”.

What do you see on Avinguda del Paral-lel?

Avinguda del Paral-lel is best known for the theaters situated on it, namely: Apolo, Victoria and Condal and for cabaret shows and erotic performances. In the past, the area of the street was the center of the city’s nightlife. In the last few decades the region’s popularity has diminished significantly in favor of Eixample (for additional information – Visit Eixample at night and Visit Barcelona at night). Today you can find numerous hotels and theaters on the street (for additional information – Bars and Restaurants in Barcelona and Hotels in Barcelona).

If you are at the beginning of the avenue you can visit Arenas de Barcelona (Arenas Mall), a new and modern shopping center, which is situated near Plaça d’Espanya, in a building that once served as a bullfight stadium. On the other side of the street you can find some of the must-see attractions, such as Mirador de Colom (Columbus Monument), Aquarium Barcelona and Maremagnum Shopping Center (for additional information – Shopping in Barcelona).

There are 3 metro stations on the boulevard, namely Paral-lel (L2, L3), Poble Sec (L3and Espanya (L1L3L8), which make it a very accessible “public transportation street” (for additional information – Public Transportation in Barcelona).

Tips and Recommendations for Visiting Avinguda del Paral-lel

  • Restaurants situated on Avinguda del Paral-lel are not the best ones. If you want, you can find some places where you can eat a meal but we do not recommend to dine in the restaurants on the boulevard (for additional information – Bars and Restaurants in Barcelona).
  • Avinguda del Paral-lel is a wheelchair-friendly street. It is wide and not very crowded. But at present, none of the metro stations situated on the avenue have a lift, therefore they are not accessible for people with limited mobility. That is why we recommend for disabled tourists to use the bus system in order to arrive to Avinguda del Paral-lel (for additional information – Public Transportation in Barcelona, Accessibility in Avinguda del Paral-lel and Accessibility in Barcelona).
