Accessibility in Montserrat

General Information

Since the area of the Monistrol de Montserrat (Monastery of Montserrat) is one of the most popular attractions in Catalonia outside of Barcelona, there are many tourists with wheelchair who visits the site.

Most of the area of the abbey is accessible by wheelchair, but there are some attractions which are problematic. One of them is the cable car, which is not accessible, so it is advised to use the elevator or the train instead of it.

Unfortunately, the Black Madonna is not approachable by wheelchair, so people with accessibility problems cannot physically touch it, but they will be able to see it from afar.

Most of the other parts of the Montserrat – the basilica itself, the main area around it, the roads to the mountains and the walking routes in the mountains are wheelchair-friendly. In conclusion, the site is generally recommend for people with disabilities (for additional information see – Accessibility in Barcelona).
