PortAventura Caribe Aquatic Park

General Information

PortAventura Caribe Aquatic Park, otherwise known as Costa Caribe Aquatic Park, is considered one of the most popular water parks in Spain. The water park lies within PortAventura World, also viewed as an entertaining leisure complex, featuring Spain’s notorious theme park, PortAventura Park. Designed with a tropical, Caribbean theme as a defining feature, the water park is located in Salou, on the Costa Dorada, ranking high among the most-visited tourist attractions in Spain.

In a short historical note, the resort opened its gates to visitors for the first time on the 1st of May, 1995 and has faced a series of successful re-branding strategies, previously being owned by Universal Studios starting with 1997. Thereby, Costa Caribe water park was built under the Universal Studios ownership in 2000 and it was inaugurated in 2002. The existing business was ultimately sold to La Caixa’s Criteria and the resort has returned to its initial name. Meanwhile Costa Caribe water park became, from 2010 to today, PortAventura Aquatic Park, Costa Caribe and it is currently registered under PortAventura Caribe Aquatic Park.

Up to this day, PortAventura Caribe Aquatic Park arranges an engaging atmosphere for a family day out, in order to ensure that every visitor is introduced to multiple relaxing and fun-filled activities. Being accessible to the entire family, the modern setting promises more than just water play attractions. Therefore, the venue is intended to offer an adventurous vacation for local tourists and for those traveling from all around the world (for additional information – Kids and Families in Barcelona and Attractions and Tours in Barcelona).

In addition to being just an hour away from Barcelona, with an area of more than 50,000 m2, PortAventura Caribe Aquatic Park offers a variety of activities for those visiting with their family and friends of all ages. To ensure a thrilling experience, the water park provides a number of 17 main attractions, which includes authentic rides and relaxing places designed for both children and adults.

The leisure complex is actively providing the tourists with an opportunity to explore the Mediterranean diversity. It is designed to accommodate a large group of guests and their varied demands. That is to say, you can not only expect a great number of exhilarating themed in-door and out-door slides, but also a pleasant occasion to loosen up and get comfortable by the water. To name a few, you can expect the most popular attraction, King Khajuna, listed as one of the world’s tallest water slides, the Bahama Beach, a place for when you are seeking some rest or La Laguna de Woody, an area designed for children only. In case you are looking for a family retreat, Sésamo Beach is the ideal choice.

At any time during a visit, you have access to restaurants and can also engage in a shopping spree. The themed restaurants offer 3 common service types: self-service, table service and on the go. In an attempt to satisfy all tastes, the menu has a selection of attractive and convenient food options, which can be savored in an open-air seating. The meals stand out by being reasonably priced and including, among others, a gluten-free-friendly menu (for additional information – Bars and Restaurants in Barcelona).

The water park offers plenty of chances to collect memories. In other words, after enjoying the fun of the highest water slide in Europe and some of the most intense rides, you can also bring home remarkable souvenirs or capture your favorite moment into a picture.

Tips and Recommendations

  • PortAventura Caribe Aquatic Park is a destination most suitable for a summer family trip, but it is also recommended for teens, adults and seniors who want to enjoy the main attractions of the water park on a warm day. Visitors 12 years or older are allowed to enter the resort without the presence of an adult (for additional information – PortAventura for Kids and Families, Kids and Families in Barcelona and Summer Vacation in Barcelona).
  • The water park offers an adequate environment for people with disabilities and provides a personalized attention to these visitors and their special needs. What is more, the entire resort is wheelchair-accessible and it also offers the possibility to rent these mobility products (for additional information – Accessibility in PortAventura and Accessibility in Barcelona).
  • It is suggested to buy the tickets online rather than the ticket booth because this way you can take advantage of the special rates, available solely on the Internet. The online tickets are preferred also because the prices are accessible to the public and can be consulted at all times.
  • The water park operates using 4 admission packages and they are divided into 3 categories, adult, junior/senior and disabled visitors (for additional information – Tickets to PortAventura Caribe Aquatic Park).
  • The discounted prices are for children aged between 4-10 years, for seniors over the age of 60 years and for disabled visitors with a minimum incapacity of 33%. If you purchase a ticket for a disabled person, you must provide evidence of said disability.
  • Another way to obtain a discount offer on your water park ticket is by choosing an overnight stay at one of the 4-star themed hotels offered by the resort. Aside from the convenient accommodation options available at PortAventura World, the venue offers a day-care center for pets, a special parking zone, the possibility to rent a locker and a free pick-up service for your shopping bags.
  • After purchasing your ticket, you are required to keep it with you for the entire visit, regardless of how many times you leave and re-enter the water park area.
  • The resort offers a 4, 6 or 8 hour guided tour of PortAventura World. This service is available in 7 languages, such as Spanish, Catalan, English, French, Russian, German and Arabic with the purchase of a PortAventura Express Premium wristband and it must be booked in advance.
  • When purchasing the PortAventura Express Premium wristband, you also have access to the water park, themed hotels and shows without the need to wait in line, information on the history of PortAventura World, useful tips on how to enjoy the venue best, free parking and directions to a restaurant reservation.
  • Outside food and beverages can not be brought into the water park, however there are 5 themed restaurants available inside the venue.
  • The restaurants opened in PortAventura Caribe Aquatic Park combine various culinary tastes, making it easy to grab a snack or a healthy meal during your stay. If you are looking for gluten-free options, this type of food is available at the Reggae Café.
  • Additionally, for those who wish to try food outside the water park, there are plenty of options available. A few miles away you can find The Roadhouse, The Dubliner, and a vegetarian friendly place, Veggie Karting Food (for additional information – Bars and Restaurants in Barcelona).
  • In order to avoid the long queues, it is recommended to arrive early at the destination.
  • The water park is open every year from May to September, starting with 10:30. The closing hour, usually between 20:00-21:00, might differ from day to day, which is why another key fact to remember is checking out the water park’s official calendar right before you decide to purchase a ticket.
  • It is highly recommended to reach PortAventura World by public transportation. It is more convenient to do so by train, using Renfe’s R-16 line that has a special stop for the resort, or by the buses available in Barcelona and Costa Dorada (for additional information – Getting to PortAventura by Train and Public Transportation in Barcelona).
  • If you are coming from Barcelona using Julia Travel, you can book both your bus ticket and a 1 day admission package for the water park with a 10% discount. If you are more comfortable renting a car, PortAventura’s partner GoldCar offers a 20% discount on your rental (for additional information – Getting to PortAventura by Private Car, Car Rental in Barcelona and Car Rental in Spain).
  • When looking for a place to stay, you may want to check those located a short distance from the water park. For example Gold River Hotel, Hotel Tolosa, Astari and Medplaya Hotel Calypso are a few good choices, but keep in mind that booking at the last minute can result in expensive rates (for additional information – PortAventura Hotel Gold River and Hotels in Barcelona).
  • During your visit at PortAventura Caribe Aquatic Park, your checklist should also include the beaches of Salou, the city of Tarragona and the Cistercian Route, areas also registered in the UNESCO World Heritage list, and one of the most visited city in Europe, Barcelona (for additional information – Attractions and Tours in Barcelona).
