General Information

CosmoCaixa (Science Museum) is the science museum of Barcelona. The museum is named after the local bank, La Caixa, which supports science and research in Catalonia. Inside the museum you can see interesting permanent and temporary expositions from different fields of science so it would be a nice experience for every visitors regardless of their age. CosmoCaixa is considered to be one of the best science museums of Europe.



What do you see in CosmoCaixa?

CosmoCaixa is situated in a new building which overlooks the city of Barcelona. If you want to see the permanent expositions you need to go down the spiral staircase. There, you will find an exhibition about the evolution of the universe and the material. This exposition has four parts; the topic of the first one is the “inert material”, after that visitors can get information about the first “living matter” on the Earth and about the complicated process of life. The third section is about the “intellectual material’ and presents the special process that operate within the human brain. The topic of the last part is the “cultured material” and includes ten big landmarks that had a significant role in the evolution of the human civilization.

Furthermore, there are two particularly attractive expositions. One of them is the Geological Wall where you can observe interesting geological structures formed by water, wind or volcanic processes. Its length is 65 meters and includes some huge boulders. The other popular exhibition is the Flooded Forest, this is a tropical jungle in a huge greenhouse which covers 1,000 square meters. There are presented 52 species of animals and 80 species of plants.

  • CosmoCaixa is a very nice museum but you cannot compare it to the Science Museum in London.

  • It is recommended to dedicate to the visit in CosmoCaixa approximately 2-3 hours.
  • In CosmoCaixa are organized many guided tours, some of them are included in the ticket and they provide a lot of explanation about the expositions in the museum. Tips for “when to visit” CosmoCaixa:

  • There are special days when the admission to CosmoCaixa is free of charge. However, on these days there are a lot of visitors and the place is usually very crowded, therefore it is highly recommended to arrive during those days early in the morning before the crowd arrives (for additional information – Barcelona for Free).
  • Note that on Mondays and holidays the museum is closed. on December 24, December 31 and January 5: 10:00-18:00. It is best advised to check the official website prior to your visit.
