General Information
Museu de la Xocolata (Chocolate Museum) is one of the popular attractions of Barcelona. It is not one of the most famous attractions, but it is definitely located in the top 20 attractions of the city.
Many tourist visit this museum but it is not as popular as Sagrada Familia, Museum Picasso or the Gothic Quarter. This attraction is highly recommended for families that visit the city with children, because of the chocolate, but also for couples that are on a romantic getaway (for additional information – Kids and Families in Barcelona and Romantic Vacation in Barcelona).
Most visitors combine their visit to the museum with a tour that includes the El Born Quarter, the Ciutadella Park or Museu Picasso. Because it is an indoor attraction it is a great choice to visit during the hottest hours of the day and then continue exploring the rest of the city when the temperatures are lower.
The Museu de la Xocolata in Barcelona is located in a red brick building in the La Rivera district near the El Born area. Like many other sites in Barcelona, the building itself used to be a monastery and has undergone many reincarnations until it became the city’s famous Museu de la Xocolata.
Museu de la Xocolata was established as an initiative of the Catalan Bakers and Chocolatiers and is intended to increase the cultural and gastronomic value of the most important tradition of Spain – the chocolate tradition (for additional information – Food in Barcelona).
The museum exhibits through large video screens, signs and interactive information systems, which tell the story of the long process that takes place on the cocoa, from the picking stage to the amazing market design that is seen in many corners of the city.
In addition, there are small chocolate models of famous attractions in the city, such as the Gothic Cathedral, the Sagrada Familia and the Olympic Park. It is one of the nicest attractions that Barcelona is offering to the visitor. Definitely recommended after visiting all the mandatory sites of the city.
