Rebajas - Sales Season

The meaning of the word “Rebajas” is “reductions” or “discounts” (it is the plural form of the Spanish word “Rebaja”). In Barcelona most stores will display this word marked in red and it can be associated with special prices, lower than usual.

Sales at the end of the season takes place twice a year in Spain, and each time it lasts for a period of two months:

  • The first period begins immediately after New Year’s Eve and ends after February.
  • The second period starts on July 1 and lasts until the end of August.

Although the official dates for the opening of the Rebajas season are January 7 and July 15, shops do not wait until this official dates.

Tip and Recommendations

  • The closure time of shops in Barcelona (those who are not situated in the nightlife areas) is at 20:00 in the summer (for additional information – Visit Barcelona at night).
  • Although Barcelona is a very central and touristy city, it is a little less expensive than its European neighborhoods such as Rome, London and Paris. Nevertheless, do not expect to find as low prices as in Greece, especially not during summer or before the holidays.
  • Barcelona is considered one of Europe’s fashion capitals, so anyone who goes for a shopping tour in the city will see both luxury and simple shops, representing both international and local brands, and a good variety of malls and markets.
  • For the products and services you order or buy in Barcelona you must pay 7% tax. Visitors who are spending at least three months in the city are entitled to the refund of this tax when they leave Barcelona. Forms can be requested at all major shops and at the airport.
  • Tax Refunds – Buyers who shop for more than 91€ in the same chain (i.e. those who shop at one store on Passeig de Gracia and in another store on La Rambla) are entitled to a tax refund. But be careful, not all of the stores can do this because they need a government approval. Though 99% of the big shops have this approval, we suggest to ask it prior to the purchase. How do you receive the refund?

    1. Before you leave the city you need to go back with the receipts to one of the stores of the chain, there you will give confirmation regarding the purchase and the amount.
    2. At the airport you go to the customer service (on the ground floor) with all of the tax return envelopes you received in the shops, with the tickets, with the passports and with the permission to access to the bank branch.
    3. Bare in mind that in some cases you might be asked to show your purchases, therefore you should do this prior to the check-in process, while you still have your luggage with you.
    4. Does it seems complicated? A bit, but it is worth it, mainly for those who visit the city in a purpose of shopping.
