Estadi Olímpic Lluís Companys

General Information

Estadi Olímpic Lluís Companys (Olympic Stadium Lluís Companys) was established in 1927, right before the International Fair hold in Barcelona, together with the Poble Espanyol and the Magic Fountains. The stadium is located on the top of Montjuic Hill and overlooks the famous port of Barcelona. In 2001, he was named after the politician Lluis Companys – one of the most important heroes of the Spanish Civil War.

The Stadium holds sports events and concerts, it has a capacity of 55,926 seats and it was used between 1998 and 2009 as the home court of the Barcelona-Espanyol football team that relocated at the Cornier-El Prat stadium in the suburbs of Barcelona, near the airport.

What do you see inside the Olympic Stadium?

The building is mainly an Olympic stadium and a football stadium with close to 56,000 seats and has a small exhibition area in memory of Lluis Companys. In addition, the stadium is host of some international performances that take place in the city (for additional information – Concerts in Barcelona). Adjacent to the stadium you can see the famous Olympic torch in Barcelona and the Barcelona Olympic Museum, which sports enthusiasts always enjoy.

Tips and Recommendations for Visiting Estadi Olímpic Lluís Companys

  • If you want to dine in the area, there are quite a few restaurants along the Avinguda del Paral-lel and Plaça d’Espanya, such as the Casa de Tapes restaurant and the Pura Barsa meat restaurant.
  • For those arriving with a private car – there is a parking area in the northern part of Montjuic, but we still recommend arriving with the metro or a bus (for additional information- Parking Near MontjuicCar Rental in Barcelona and Car Rental in Spain).
  • Most of the attractions surroundings are outdoors and it is hard to find shade, therefore, it is recommended to take a lot of water with you.
  • For the Barcelona Card holders the entrance to the Olympic museum is free.
  • The paths are steep and the hike to the Montjuic is not simple for those who are not in a good shape. Using a bicycle is also not a great idea for someone who is not fit. Do not worry though – there are escalators (only upwards) that will take you all the way up to the top. It is important to know that the stairs (and the cable car) are not accessible to people with reduced mobility (for additional information – Accessibility in Barcelona and Accessibility in Estadi Olímpic Lluís Companys). For those who want to board a cable car (a very nice option) it is important to make sure (especially in the winter) that the cable car is open because when there is a strong wind it is not operated for the safety of the passengers (for additional information – Cable car of Montjuic at winter).
