Barcelona's Port Cable Car

General Information

Transbordador Aeri del Port, also known as Barcelona’s Port Cable Car, Port Cable Car, Port Vell Aerial Tramway or Telefèric Aeri del Port, is a cable car that connects the beach area of Barcelona with Montjuic hill.

This cable car was built for the Second Barcelona Universal Exposition organized in 1929, but it was not finished in time and it started to operate only in 1931. Due to the Civil War, it was closed and a long period has passed until it was reopened and renovated (for additional information – History of Barcelona). Nevertheless, today the cable car can be considered to be one of the main attractions of Barcelona.

It makes a 1292 meters and 10 minutes long journey between La Barceloneta district and Montjuic (for additional information – Attractions and Tours near La Barceloneta and Attractions and Tours near Montjuic). The vehicle consists of two red and white cabins, the maximum capacity is 20 persons (19 travelers and the cabin attendant).

Transbordador Aeri del Port has three stations: Torre Sant Sebastià, Torre Jaume I and Estación de Miramar in Montjuïc. At the middle station is held a short break but currently it does not work as a station, so you cannot get on or off the cable car.

A ride in this cable car is an excellent opportunity to admire the main landmarks of the city, the port, the sea and the mountains from a special perspective. You will travel over famous constructions such as Sagrada Familia and Torre Agbar. Additionally, you will pass near the imposing World Trade Center and the well-known Montjuïc Communications Tower. Since travelers are not sitting in the cable car, they can change their position easily and enjoy the landscape below them from more windows.

You will get off the cable car opposite Hotel Miramar, in the wonderful Costa i Llobera Gardens, a nice botanical garden where you can take a pleasant walk, admire several amazing statues and plants and take a look at the port of Barcelona and the Poble Sec area using one of the telescopes settled in the garden.

Since the garden does not have a large area, it is suggested to combine it with other attractions and tours in Montjuic. You will be helped by different maps and signposts located in the area.

Returning from Montjuic

There are more possibilities to return from the hill to the city. You either take a walk on the beautiful slopes of the mountain or get on the funicular at Estació Funicular station. Naturally, you can arrive back to the harbour also by the cable car itself.

If you want another exciting adventure before you go back to the city, you can try the other cable car in the area of Montjuic. The Telefèric de Montjuïc, one of its stations is situated near the hotel and it goes up to the Montjuic Castle (for additional information – Attractions and Tours near Montjuic Castle).

Who is it Recommended for?

Transbordador Aeri del Port is a nice attraction which can be a great experience for everyone. You can try it alone, with your friends, with your family or with your partner (for additional information – Romantic Vacation in Barcelona and Kids and Families in Barcelona).

Since the whole area is very family-friendly and kids are entitled to a significant discount, it is especially recommended for families with children (for additional information – Cable Cars to the Montjuic for Kids and Families and Kids and Families in Montjuic).

Nonetheless, a travel at a height of 70-90 meters above the harbour of Barcelona is not dedicated for those who are afraid of heights.

People with disabilities who are using a wheelchair should skip this attraction since the cable car is not accessible for wheelchair (for additional information – Accessibility of Montjuïc Cable Car and Accessibility in Barcelona).

Tips and Recommendations

  • Transbordador Aeri del Port has several other names. It is also known as Barcelona Port Cable Car, Port Cable Car, Port Vell Aerial Tramway or Telefèric Aeri del Port. Note that all of these names refers to the same vehicle. Nevertheless, you should not confuse it with Montjuïc Cable Car also known as Telefèric de Montjuïc, which is another cable car that operates in the area of Montjuic hill (for additional information – Cable Car Barcelona and Attractions and Tours near Montjuic).
  • The journey on Transbordador Aeri del Port can be combined with numerous attractions in the area of Port Vell and Montjuic. You can take a walk in Avinguda del Paral-lel or in the harbour of Barcelona. You can visit also remarkable places such as Mirador de Colom (Columbus Monument), Poble Espanyol (The Spanish Village), Fundació Joan Miró, Museu Nacional d’Art de Catalunya and Montjuïc Castle. Furthermore you can admire the wonderful Costa i Llobera Garden and the Font màgica de Montjuïc (Magic Fountain of Montjuic). In summer you will find also the outdoor Olympic Dive Pool.
  • It is a bit difficult to get to the beach station of Transbordador Aeri del Port. Its first station is situated inside Port Vell. If you arrive there by metro, you need to walk approximately 5 minutes between the metro station and the cable car. In our map you can take a look at the exact route (for additional information – Public Transportation in Barcelona).
  • Transbordador Aeri del Port starts in every 10-15 minutes.
  • At Torre Jaume I, Transbordador Aeri del Port stops for a short break but currently you cannot get on or off at this station.
  • At the end of the ride you can have a good meal at Torre d’Alta Mar Restaurant, which is situated on the top of the cable car tower, so it is sure that it will not be a common experience (for additional information – Bars and Restaurants in Barcelona).
  • Cafeteria Miramar is another option to relax and admire the Catalan city lying below you. Nevertheless, you need to be aware that prices are not so “wonderful” as the place itself. Due to the favorable position of the cafeteria, foods and drinks are pretty overpriced.
  • Montjuic hill is full of maps and signposts which helps you to find the right direction to the attractions you want to see in the neighborhood (for additional information – Attractions and Tours near Montjuic). It is strongly recommended to follow them if you do not want to get lost.
  • It is suggested to check the Barcelona’s Port Cable Car schedule prior to your trip, since it is subject to change due to weather conditions and holidays (for additional information – Weather in Barcelona and Public Holidays in Barcelona).
  • Between November and March Barcelona’s Port Cable Car does not work between 14:00-15:00 (for additional information – Montjuïc Cable Car During Winter and Winter Vacation in Barcelona).
  • It is not recommended to purchase tickets for Transbordador Aeri del Port in advance during winter and autumn since the cable car does not work in rainy and windy weather.
  • Barcelona’s Port Cable Car is closed in every January for two weeks due to annual maintenance. That is why it is suggested to check the schedule of the cable car while you are planning your vacation.
  • This attraction is very popular, especially during the high season, therefore it is highly recommended to book the tickets in advance and ensure you participation.

  • If you buy your tickets for Transbordador Aeri del Port online, you can get a 10% discount (for additional information – Montjuïc Cable Car Tickets in Advance).
  • This attraction is recommended for the ones traveling to Barcelona for a romantic vacation (for additional information – Romantic Vacation in Barcelona).

  • This attraction is recommended for the ones traveling to Barcelona with kids, it is very popular among families (for additional information – Kids and Families in Barcelona).

  • Transbordador Aeri del Port is not wheelchair-friendly, therefore we recommend for disabled tourists to skip this attraction (for additional information – Accessibility of Montjuïc Cable Car and Accessibility in Barcelona).
  • Since Transbordador Aeri del Port is very popular between tourists and there is place just for 19 travelers, the vehicle is usually full. Due to this, it is hard to get the best positions near the windows for taking photos or for admiring the landscape. You need to have patience and wait until a favorable place is released. Another suggestion is to arrive to the station as early as possible in order to get on the cable car among the first passengers, so you can provide the best place for yourself. Note that the side windows cannot be opened, and therefore they are not considered to be the best choice.
